Oklahoma Sooners defensive back Kendel Dolby has officially announced his return for the 2025 season, providing a significant boost to the team’s defensive lineup.
Dolby, who transferred to Oklahoma from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in December 2022, has been a versatile and impactful player, particularly in the “cheetah” position—a hybrid role combining linebacker and defensive back responsibilities.
In the 2023 season, Dolby made an immediate impact by participating in all 13 games, including three starts. He recorded 49 tackles, five tackles for loss, two sacks, two interceptions, and four passes defended, earning an All-Big 12 honorable mention.
The 2024 season began promisingly for Dolby as he secured the starting role at the cheetah position. In the first three games, he amassed ten tackles, including a sack and a pass deflection. However, his momentum was halted by a severe ankle injury in the fourth game against Tennessee, which sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
Head coach Brent Venables expressed his support for Dolby following the injury, stating, “My heart breaks for him. He’ll be fine, he’ll recover, and he’ll continue to have an opportunity to play this game a long time.”
Dolby’s decision to return aligns with announcements from other key defensive players, including linebacker Kip Lewis, defensive tackle Damonic Williams, and safety Robert Spears-Jennings, all of whom have committed to the 2025 season. This collective return of experienced defenders is expected to strengthen Oklahoma’s defensive unit significantly.
The cheetah position, which Dolby is anticipated to reprise, is crucial in Venables’ defensive scheme, requiring a player with the agility to cover receivers and the physicality to support against the run. Dolby’s skill set and experience make him an ideal fit for this role, and his return is expected to enhance the defense’s versatility and effectiveness.
With Dolby and other key defenders returning, the Sooners are poised to build upon their defensive performance from the previous season. The continuity and experience these players bring are invaluable assets as Oklahoma aims to compete at the highest level in the upcoming season.
Dolby’s journey from junior college standout to a pivotal player in Oklahoma’s defense underscores his dedication and resilience. His return not only bolsters the team’s defensive capabilities but also serves as an inspiration to his teammates and fans.
As the 2025 season approaches, the anticipation surrounding Oklahoma’s defense continues to grow, with Kendel Dolby’s return being a central component of the team’s strategy for success.
