Florida State University (FSU) has made a significant addition to its football roster by securing Marquarius “Squirrel” White, a dynamic wide receiver transferring from the University of Tennessee.
White’s commitment, announced on January 5, 2025, is poised to enhance the Seminoles’ offensive capabilities in the upcoming season.
Standing at 5-foot-10 and weighing 170 pounds, White hails from Pinson, Alabama, and brings with him a wealth of experience from his three seasons with the Tennessee Volunteers. During his tenure at Tennessee, he accumulated impressive statistics, including 131 receptions for 1,665 yards and six touchdowns. His versatility was further demonstrated by his contributions as a punt returner, showcasing his multifaceted skill set.
White’s journey to FSU is marked by notable achievements and resilience. In his freshman year at Tennessee, he made an immediate impact with 30 receptions for 481 yards and two touchdowns, starting the final two of 12 games. His sophomore season was even more remarkable, leading the Volunteers’ wideouts with 67 receptions for 803 yards and two touchdowns, including three games with over 100 receiving yards. Despite facing shoulder and arm injuries during his junior year, White managed to start 10 of 13 games, recording 34 catches for 381 yards and two touchdowns, and contributing as a punt returner with seven returns for 112 yards.
Known for his exceptional speed and agility, White’s athleticism is well-documented. In high school, he showcased his sprinting prowess with a 10.68-second 100-meter dash and a 21.58-second 200-meter dash, securing runner-up finishes in the state championship meet. His speed was further highlighted at Tennessee, where he reached 23.4 miles per hour on the team’s Catapult GPS trackers.
FSU’s head coach, Mike Norvell, has been strategic in utilizing the transfer portal to bolster the team’s roster, and White’s addition aligns with this approach. White’s experience in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), coupled with his versatility to play both as a slot receiver and out wide, makes him a valuable asset for the Seminoles. His toughness and ability to perform under pressure are expected to contribute significantly to FSU’s offensive strategies.
White’s decision to join FSU was influenced by the opportunity to be a primary target in the Seminoles’ offense. During his visit to Tallahassee, he expressed enthusiasm about the potential fit, stating, “The visit was amazing. I really liked Tallahassee. It’s a place that I can feel like I can be a great fit for this offense.” He also emphasized the prospect of increased involvement, noting, “The main thing is I would be the 2 [wide receiver] here, meaning I would be getting a lot of touches. That’s something I was big on.”
As the Seminoles prepare for the 2025 season, White is expected to compete for a starting role under new wide receivers coach Tim Harris Jr. His addition not only brings depth to the receiving corps but also introduces a playmaker capable of making significant contributions both offensively and on special teams. With his blend of speed, experience, and determination, Squirrel White is poised to be a game-changer for Florida State’s football program.
