Jake Retzlaff, a 21-year-old quarterback for Brigham Young University (BYU), has made history as the first Jewish starting quarterback in the school’s history.
His journey from a junior college in California to leading BYU to a 10-2 record in the Big 12 Conference has been remarkable. Off the field, Retzlaff has embraced his Jewish identity, becoming a role model for many.
In December 2024, Retzlaff secured a groundbreaking Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal with Manischewitz, a renowned Jewish food and wine brand. This partnership marks Manischewitz’s first venture into NIL agreements. As part of the deal, special-edition matzo boxes featuring Retzlaff’s likeness were produced, and he shared personal family recipes and traditions through various media platforms.

Despite initial concerns about fitting in, he found acceptance and curiosity about his faith from his peers. Known as the “BYJew,” he has embraced his role as an ambassador for Judaism, participating in various Jewish rituals and events, such as leading Hanukkah menorah lighting and bringing kosher food to team events.
His visibility has inspired young Jewish athletes and provided a sense of pride and courage to Jewish individuals struggling with their identities. Retzlaff’s impact extends beyond football, promoting understanding and respect for Judaism within the BYU community.
