Nebraska linebacker Javin Wright has announced his return to the Cornhuskers for a seventh season in 2025, a decision made possible after receiving a waiver from the NCAA.
Wright’s tenure at Nebraska has been marked by resilience in the face of significant health challenges, particularly recurring blood clot issues that have limited his playing time over the years. After redshirting in 2019, he suffered a season-ending injury during fall camp in 2020. The following year, he appeared in only two games due to blood clots. Despite these setbacks, Wright persevered, participating in 23 games across the 2022 and 2023 seasons. In 2024, he missed the first four games but returned to play in nine games, recording 34 tackles, including a standout performance in the Pinstripe Bowl against Boston College, where he notched a team-high eight tackles.
Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 230 pounds, Wright is known for his versatility and athleticism, excelling in both run defense and pass coverage. His return bolsters Nebraska’s inside linebacker corps, which has experienced departures through transfers and graduations. The Huskers have also strengthened this position by adding Georgia Southern transfer Marques Watson-Trent, the 2024 Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year, and Dasan McCullough from Oklahoma. Additionally, four-star freshman Christian Jones is set to join the lineup, further enhancing the team’s defensive depth.
Wright’s decision to return is not only a testament to his dedication but also a significant advantage for Nebraska’s defense. Linebackers coach Rob Dvoracek hinted at this possibility during preparations for the Pinstripe Bowl, expressing optimism about Wright’s return and acknowledging the challenges he has overcome.
As the son of former Nebraska standout Toby Wright, Javin’s return adds a legacy element to the team’s dynamic. His experience and leadership are expected to play a crucial role in mentoring younger players and contributing to the Huskers’ defensive strategies in the upcoming season.
With Wright’s return, Nebraska’s defense gains a seasoned player whose journey reflects resilience and commitment. His presence is anticipated to enhance the team’s performance as they prepare for the challenges of the 2025 season.
