BYU football has secured its first commitment for the 2026 recruiting class: Justice Brathwaite, a promising cornerback from Higley High School in Gilbert, Arizona.
Standing at 6 feet and weighing 160 pounds, Brathwaite is ranked as the 68th overall cornerback nationally by 247Sports. During his junior season, he recorded 39 tackles, three interceptions, and 11 pass deflections, showcasing his defensive prowess and playmaking abilities.
Brathwaite’s commitment to BYU carries a familial legacy. His father, Reynaldo Brathwaite, played for the Cougars from 2002 to 2003 and holds the record for the longest scoring run in BYU history—a 95-yard touchdown against San Diego State in 2003.
Justice chose BYU over offers from several Big 12 programs, including Arizona State, Kansas, and Iowa State, as well as other schools like San Diego State, UTEP, and UNLV. His decision reflects both his personal connection to the university and his confidence in BYU’s football program.
BYU’s coaching staff identified Brathwaite as a key target early in the 2026 recruiting cycle. Cornerbacks coach Jernaro Gilford, who played alongside Reynaldo Brathwaite at BYU, extended the offer during the spring evaluation period, emphasizing the program’s commitment to building relationships and honoring its legacy.
The Cougars are coming off a successful 2024 season, finishing with a 10-2 record and ranking No. 17 in the final College Football Playoff standings. Securing a talented recruit like Brathwaite not only adds depth to their defensive lineup but also continues the tradition of family legacies contributing to the team’s success.
As the first commitment of the 2026 class, Brathwaite sets a promising tone for BYU’s future recruiting efforts. His blend of athleticism, skill, and legacy ties make him a standout addition to the Cougars’ roster, and fans eagerly anticipate his impact on the field in the coming years.
