Arizona State University’s football program has made significant strides in strengthening its offensive and defensive lines by acquiring three notable transfers
offensive linemen Jimeto Obigbo from Texas State and Xander Ruggeroli from Nebraska, along with defensive tackle My’Keil Gardner from Oregon.
Jimeto Obigbo: A Proven Offensive Lineman
Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 339 pounds, Jimeto Obigbo brings considerable experience and skill to the Sun Devils’ offensive line. A native of Arlington, Texas, and an alumnus of Mansfield Timberview High School, Obigbo began his collegiate career at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW). During his tenure at UIW, he showcased his versatility by playing multiple positions along the offensive line. In 2022, he earned Second Team All-Southland honors, contributing to an offense that led the nation in scoring across all NCAA Division I teams.
In 2023, Obigbo transferred to Texas State, where he continued to excel as a starter, predominantly at right tackle. He played 1,002 snaps that season, demonstrating durability and consistency. Unfortunately, his 2024 season was curtailed due to injuries, limiting him to just four games. Despite this setback, Obigbo is expected to be fully prepared for the upcoming season with Arizona State. Notably, he reunites with his former high school teammate, Josh Atkins, who currently serves as the Sun Devils’ starting left tackle.
My’Keil Gardner: Bolstering the Defensive Front
Defensive tackle My’Keil Gardner, standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 295 pounds, returns to his home state of Arizona after a stint with the Oregon Ducks. A product of Liberty High School in Peoria, Gardner was a highly regarded recruit, ranked as the No. 11 prospect in Arizona and the No. 40 defensive tackle nationally in the 2023 class.
Gardner’s time at Oregon was marred by injuries. After redshirting his first year, he missed the entire 2024 season due to a preseason injury. With three years of eligibility remaining, Gardner aims to make a significant impact on Arizona State’s defensive line, joining a rotation that includes returning players such as CJ Fite and Zac Swanson.
Xander Ruggeroli: Adding Depth to the Offensive Line
Hailing from Las Vegas, Nevada, and a graduate of the renowned Bishop Gorman High School, offensive lineman Xander Ruggeroli stands at 6-foot-6 and weighs 285 pounds. After redshirting his freshman year at Nebraska, Ruggeroli has four years of eligibility left. While he may not immediately feature in the starting lineup, his addition provides valuable depth to the Sun Devils’ offensive line, which returns four starters from the previous season.
Strategic Implications for the Sun Devils
Head Coach Kenny Dillingham and his staff have been proactive in utilizing the transfer portal to address key positional needs. The acquisition of Obigbo and Ruggeroli enhances the offensive line’s depth and competition, crucial for protecting the quarterback and establishing a robust running game. Obigbo’s prior experience and connection with Atkins could foster immediate on-field chemistry.
On the defensive side, Gardner’s return to Arizona is anticipated to bolster the interior defensive line. His presence is expected to enhance the team’s ability to disrupt opposing offenses and strengthen run defense. With multiple years of eligibility, Gardner has the potential to develop into a cornerstone of the Sun Devils’ defense.
These strategic additions reflect Arizona State’s commitment to building a competitive roster capable of contending in the upcoming season. By focusing on the trenches, the Sun Devils are laying the groundwork for both offensive and defensive success.
