Mardi Gras at Sea
June 4, 2029 — Miami, FL — Carnival Cruise Line has announced a major overhaul of its popular VIFP (Very Important Fun Person) Club, unveiling a new tiered loyalty program set to launch across its global fleet in early 2029. Designed to reward repeat cruisers with more exclusive benefits, the revamped VIFP program will now offer six distinct membership levels, with added perks for the most dedicated travelers.
The updated structure introduces a brand-new Diamond Elite tier, positioned above the current top-tier Platinum status. To qualify, guests must complete 100 cruise days or more, with benefits including complimentary suite upgrades, priority embarkation and disembarkation at every port, and access to private onboard lounges with concierge service.
Carnival President Christine Duffy highlighted the importance of recognizing customer loyalty in the competitive cruise industry. “Our VIFP guests are at the heart of everything we do,” she said during a press event at Carnival’s headquarters. “This refreshed program offers richer rewards and a more personalized cruise experience for our most devoted cruisers.”
Alongside tier upgrades, Carnival is introducing Cruise Credits — a new points-based system that takes into account not just cruise days but also booking class, onboard spending, and participation in shore excursions. This change aims to better reflect a guest’s overall engagement and value to the brand, rather than simply the number of days at sea.
Carnival’s mobile app has also received a major update to accommodate the VIFP changes. Cruisers can now track their Cruise Credits in real time, receive exclusive offers based on tier, and even chat with a VIFP concierge before, during, and after their voyages. The app will also serve as a digital loyalty card and boarding pass.
Reactions among loyal Carnival fans have been mixed. Long-time Platinum member Sarah Jennings of Houston, TX, says she’s thrilled by the expanded benefits. “I love the new direction! I’ve been sailing with Carnival for over a decade, and it feels great to see them investing in loyal guests like me,” she said. However, some newer cruisers expressed concern that it could now take longer to reach meaningful rewards.
Carnival has promised that all current VIFP points and statuses will carry over into the new system without loss, ensuring that no loyal guest is left behind. Additionally, guests sailing between now and the official rollout in March 2029 will receive double Cruise Credits as part of a limited-time promotion celebrating the program’s re-launch.
With competition heating up in the cruise market — particularly from Royal Caribbean’s Crown & Anchor Society and Norwegian’s Latitudes Rewards — Carnival’s VIFP upgrade appears to be a strategic move to retain and grow its loyal base. As the cruise line prepares to launch three new Excel-class ships over the next two years, a more robust loyalty program could be key to filling cabins and cultivating long-term relationships with guests.
